Installing the beta version¶
Beta version 2.1 is installed from a separate beta repository on the same server, repo.pstreamer.tv. The packages and metadata of the beta repository are signed with the same key as the stable repository; the key fingerprint and how to install the key are given in Installation on RHEL-family systems and Installation on Debian-family systems.
The beta repository holds only the pstreamer package, and it needs a licence to run; a valid version 2.x licence also works for the beta. There is no demo edition in the beta channel: the pstreamer-demo package stays on the stable version 2.0.2. The terms of participation, reporting problems and going back to the stable version are described in Beta testing programme.
The beta repository is added on top of the stable one: the package manager takes pstreamer from the repository with the newer version, that is, from the beta repository.
Note
The beta repository is connected alongside the stable 2.x repository (pstreamer2), and that one must stay connected: the protection service aksusbd and the transcoders are installed from it. Disable the 1.x repository (/etc/yum.repos.d/pstreamer.repo or /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pstreamer.list): otherwise, when you leave the beta, the package manager may downgrade the node to 1.x (A node on version 1.x).
Note
Before you move from the stable version to the beta, save a copy of the settings file /opt/pss/config/pss.json (if the file already exists) under a new name, for example pss.json.$(date +%Y%m%d_%H%M%S). With it, going back to the stable version loses no setting (How to go back to the stable version).
Debian family systems¶
Add the stable repository and the key if they are not added yet (Installation on Debian-family systems), then the beta repository:
$ sudo wget https://repo.pstreamer.tv/pub/deb/dists/pstreamer2-beta/pstreamer2-beta.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pstreamer2-beta.list
$ sudo apt-get update
To install the beta version or upgrade the stable one to it:
$ sudo apt-get install pstreamer
The command apt-cache policy pstreamer shows which version is installed and which repository it came from.
RHEL family systems¶
Add the beta repository for RHEL 7:
$ sudo yum install yum-utils
$ sudo yum-config-manager --add-repo=https://repo.pstreamer.tv/pub/pstreamer2-beta/pstreamer2-beta.repo
Or for RHEL 8+:
$ sudo yum config-manager --add-repo=https://repo.pstreamer.tv/pub/pstreamer2-beta/pstreamer2-beta.repo
The repository file goes to /etc/yum.repos.d/pstreamer2-beta.repo. If the stable repository is not added yet, add it too (Installation on RHEL-family systems).
To install the beta version:
$ sudo yum -y install pstreamer
To upgrade the stable version to it:
$ sudo yum -y update pstreamer
Note
In openSUSE, the beta repository is added with sudo zypper addrepo https://repo.pstreamer.tv/pub/pstreamer2-beta/pstreamer2-beta.repo, and the upgrade is sudo zypper refresh and sudo zypper update pstreamer.
After installation
On a new server, activate the service and configure its initial settings as with a normal installation. A node upgraded from the stable version keeps its licence and settings.
A node on version 1.x¶
If the node runs version 1.x — including after an accidental downgrade to it — the 2.x package stops the upgrade: version 2.0.2 and later do not accept a licence key issued for a version older than 2.0.2, and the service would not start after such an upgrade. On RHEL the upgrade aborts with the message Error in PREIN scriptlet and no explanation.
Get an updated V2C licence file from your supplier. With a trial licence this step is not needed.
Disable the 1.x repository and connect the stable 2.x repository (Installation on RHEL-family systems, Installation on Debian-family systems).
Confirm the upgrade in advance and upgrade the package:
$ sudo touch /opt/pss/config/lic-key-updated $ sudo yum -y update pstreamer
Instead of the file, you can set the variable
PSS_LICENSE_KEY_UPDATED=1in the environment of the upgrade command. On Debian the upgrade issudo apt-get install pstreamer.Apply the updated key (Permanent activation); with a trial licence, run
/opt/pss/tools/activate.shwithout arguments.
